2 Bersatu reps want Selangor’s DRT deal scrapped

PETALING JAYA: Two Bersatu assemblymen have called for the Selangor government to cancel the contract for a transport-related project that was awarded to a start-up linked to a federal minister’s husband.
Jeram assemblyman Harrison Hassan said the project needs to be re-tendered, especially in view of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s assertion that his administration would do away with direct negotiations.
Harrison said the decision to award Asia Mobiliti Technologies Sdn Bhd (Asia Mobiliti) the project created the perception there was abuse of power and nepotism.
“I am also disappointed by the shallowness, dishonesty and naivety of those who defended the move on grounds that Hannah Yeoh’s Cabinet post had nothing to do with the decision by the state government,” he said in a statement.
Asia Mobility CEO Ramachandran Muniandy is married to Yeoh, who is the youth and sports minister. This has led to questions on the possibility of preferential treatment or a conflict of interest in the awarding of the contract.
Similarly, Gombak Setia assemblyman Hilman Idham also called for the deal to be scrapped and urged the state government to explain its decision to award the contract.
“The decision to select these two companies has led to many questions on the contract,” he said in a statement referring to Asia Mobility and Badan Bas Coach.
“This includes how much is the state government’s investment in the project, what is the business model, and what is the return on investment?”
Last Friday, Selangor investment, trade and mobility committee chairman Ng Sze Han said the two companies were selected to run the system after they made a presentation to the state transport committee and also based on their experience in rolling out their proof of concept.
On Monday, Asia Mobiliti defended its involvement in Selangor’s new demand-responsive transit (DRT) service, saying only two companies in the country are qualified to provide the service.
In a statement, it claimed that an open tender for the Selangor Mobility programme – a “highly specialised new service” – would have created a monopoly in the state.
Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Azam Baki has since said the agency will not probe a possible conflict of interest in the matter as Yeoh’s husband got the contract from the Selangor government, and it was not directly related to her ministry.
