Bersatu backs Muhyiddin amid controversial Nenggiri speech

PETALING JAYA: Bersatu says it will continue to back party president Muhyiddin Yassin who is mired in controversy after questioning why he was not appointed prime minister after the 15th general election (GE15).
In a statement, Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin said the party is solidly behind Muhyiddin and their fight to create a better future for Malaysia.
“We firmly stand with the president in upholding the principles of constitutional monarchy and the rule of law,” said Hamzah.
“Allah will protect those who speak the truth and remain patient in the face of trials.”
Muhyiddin is being investigated by the police for questioning why he was not invited by the former king, Al-Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, to become the prime minister after GE15 on Nov 19, 2022.
In a campaign speech in Nenggiri, the former prime minister said he had obtained a simple majority and had the backing of enough MPs to form the government.
The Bersatu president’s remarks led to numerous police reports calling for stern action to be taken against him for questioning the king’s authority.
The Tengku Mahkota of Pahang, Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah, had also expressed anger at Muhyiddin over his remarks, accusing him of deliberately disparaging the former king.
The Pagoh MP has since defended his “factual” speech, saying it was not intended to insult the monarchy or incite the public.
As part of the police probe, Muhyiddin, who is also the Perikatan Nasional chairman, has submitted statutory declarations from 115 MPs purportedly backing him as prime minister soon after GE15.
In his statement today, PN secretary-general Hamzah said that after receiving a letter from Dewan Rakyat speaker Azhar Azizan Harun on Nov 20, 2022, he had sent a letter to Istana Negara the next day before the 2pm deadline.
The letter from Azhar, which conveyed the king’s instructions for MPs with majority support to submit the relevant statutory declarations from other MPs, was also handed to the police to assist in its probe into Muhyiddin.
“It is true that MPs from PN and other parties, totaling 114 members on Nov 21, 2022, supported Muhyiddin to be appointed as prime minister,” said Hamzah.
“An additional MP later increased this support to 115. This is a fact that cannot be denied, and Muhyiddin presented the facts.
“All PN leaders are aware of the facts regarding what happened.”
