Ex-deputy minister files report over human trafficking claims

PETALING JAYA: A former deputy minister in the prime minister’s department has lodged a police report over allegations linking her to a human trafficking syndicate in Myanmar.
According to a Facebook post, Mashitah Ibrahim filed the report at Bukit Aman yesterday.
She denied involvement in such activities and described the allegations as “being sourced from sensationalist Indonesian media”.
“I will not hesitate to take legal action against those trying to link me to this defamatory claim aimed at damaging my reputation,” she said.
“Thank you to my concerned friends. Alhamdulillah, I remain steadfast in my adherence to Islamic teachings and am not involved in any activities that contradict religious or Malaysian laws.”
Mashitah was the Baling MP from 2004 to 2013, and a senator from 2008 to 2014.
Yesterday, the Malaysia International Humanitarian Organisation (MHO) urged the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate allegations of a local politician’s involvement with a human trafficking syndicate in Myanmar.
MHO secretary-general Hishamuddin Hashim said this comes after a viral video claiming that the politician and her husband were actively in the syndicate.
The person in question is believed to have been involved in the syndicate since 2020, he alleged.
