Guan Eng lodged report against key witness, court hears

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng has filed a police report against a key prosecution witness testifying in his ongoing undersea tunnel corruption trial, suspecting that false testimony will be given in a bid to bring him down.
Defence counsel Haijan Omar told the sessions court here today a police report was filed against businessman Zarul Ahmad Zulkifli at the Sentul police station last month.
“(Lim) came to know that an individual named him in another police report. This person claimed that someone threatened him to give false evidence against my client,” Haijan told judge Azura Alwi.
“My client believes someone is trying to frame him.”
He said Lim has been informed that the police investigation into the matter has begun.
Deputy public prosecutor Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin questioned Lim’s reasons for doing so at this stage.
“Why bring the police in?” he said, adding that Lim’s trial has yet to be completed.
Haijan responded by saying he was merely notifying the court of the matter, adding that he had not raised it with the intention of disturbing the progress of the trial.
Azura said she took note of the filing of the report.
“It will not affect the case as I won’t be subjected to police investigation,” she said.
Continuing his testimony today, Zarul informed the court from the witness stand that his lawyers had advised him to lodge a police report in order to clear his name.
Azura said it was within Zarul’s right to do so.
Lim is standing trial, charged with using his position as then Penang chief minister to ask Zarul for a 10% cut of the profits from the undersea tunnel project and accepting RM3.3 million in kickbacks from the businessman.
He is also accused of two counts of dishonestly misappropriating RM208.7 million worth of state land.
