More greenwashing cases in M’sia than Brunei, Singapore, database shows

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia currently has more corporate and state greenwashing cases than neighbours Singapore and Brunei, according to a new guideline and database set up by environmental watchdog, RimbaWatch.
“Greenwashing” is a reference to unsubstantiated claims made to deceive consumers into believing that a product is environmentally friendly.
Malaysia recorded 12 of the 17 cases observed among the three nations since Jan 1, 2020, according to the Zero Greenwashing Alliance Guidelines and Database, which was released today.
Of the remaining cases, three were detected in Singapore and one in Brunei.
RimbaWatch director Adam Farhan said 11 of the 17 cases were fossil fuel-related claims, two involved financial players such as banks, three concerned transportation companies including airlines, and one was connected to a state agency.
“Examples of case files include organisations that have published communications regarding non-credible carbon neutrality claims or inadequate net-zero targets, or claiming products have zero environmental impact,” he said in a statement.

Adam, however, said that although the database ranked Malaysia as the highest, it was currently not a comprehensive representation of greenwashing in the region.
“The rankings will change as the database is increasingly populated in the coming weeks and months.
“We see this as an opportunity to promote transparency and accountability through displaying such cases on a single platform,” he said.
He added that the group was analysing claims made in the property development sector which would be added to the database.
Commenting on the launch of the guideline and database, believed to be the first of its kind in Asia, Adam said that prior to the initiative, information on corporate greenwashing was only found in isolated news articles and NGO press releases, with little insight available on key offenders and trends.
“Today, the database provides standardised criteria, benchmarked against international standards, to define greenwashing, and establishes full visibility and accountability of the organisations engaging in greenwashing.”
Adam expressed hope that the initiative would serve as a catalyst for action which would encourage the reporting of such cases to national advertising regulators, including the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.
